National Poetry Month continues with Essential Poems: A Sampler of Poems by Ten American Poets

I had the honor of reading some pretty engrossing poems that took me from the streets, to airplanes and proclamations to the inside of a mother’s home where she believes her child could potentially be deadly. I enjoyed curling up and reading these poems nonstop and you will too.

For example,

The baby is asleep a room away. White. Male. American. Potentially the most deadly creature of the species.”(from Monster, by Robin Morgan)

Or how about Sherman Alexie’s “Another Proclamation” :

When Lincoln Delivered the Emancipation Proclamation, Who knew that one year earlier, in 1862, he’d signed to approve the order for the largest public execution in United States history?”

And from there is the most gut punching poem with a shocking question at the end.

Other venerable poets included in the sampler are Alice Walker, Erica Jong, Nancy Willard, Carol Muske-Dukes, and more.
