Body Image From A Christian Perspective

The Christian who needs a boost of self esteem in the midst of liposuction thighs, Botox eyes, and Silicon Valleys will consult Psalms 139:14 “I will praise thee for I am wonderfully and fearfully made; marvelous are thy works and that my soul knoweth right well.”

Psalms begins with the words: “I will praise thee for I am wonderfully and fearfully made.” What does this means? God being the perfect Creator that He is has put His love and intelligence, and his breath into our bodies.

We are not to revere our bodies because it is but flesh and will waste away, yet God requires that we praise Him for making us the way we are. This may seem backwards to some people, because praising God for the way we look will go against the grain of our many imperfections: bumpy skin, thick course hair, and gangly bodies. Praising God is required to put things into perspective. A person is more than flesh and jewelry and silicon, cherry lipgloss, or huge biceps.
