‘A Noiseless Patient Spider’; Whitman flings his soul somewhere

phototini.deviantart.com

‘A Noiseless Patient Spider’ (1881) delivers a powerful, two stanza poem comparing the body and soul to a spider and its web. The speaker of the poem. After two readings it appears that the Spider=Speaker’s Body and its web=Speaker’s Soul. We will also look at language, symbols, and tone/mood. Check out the poem below:

A noiseless, patient spider,
I mark’d, where, on a little promontory, it stood, isolated;
Mark’d how, to explore the vacant, vast surrounding,
It launch’d forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself;
Ever unreeling them—ever tirelessly speeding them.

And you, O my Soul, where you stand,
Surrounded, surrounded, in measureless oceans of space,
Ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing,—seeking the spheres, to connect them;
Till the bridge you will need, be form’d—till the ductile anchor hold;
Till the gossamer thread you fling, catch somewhere, O my Soul(by Walt Whitman 1819-1892)

***

Objects and Symbols

*A Spider

*The Soul

*A Bridge

There may be more objects you spot, but the poem’s title mentions a spider and the Speaker seems to be observing this little creature closely. The Speaker then says, “Oh my Soul…” in the second stanza which has some significance which we’ll explore later and finally there is the mention of a bridge being needed which will be formed in due time.

*Language/Rhyme

Here is where we get to more meat and potatoes of the poem, where they flow of the words and their positioning gives juicy meaning. Remember, this is what I gleaned from my reading, it may not necessarily be what you discover.

*”Noiseless, Patient”(line 1-slant rhyme)

*Mar’d…mark’d(lines 2-3; repetition)

*Vacant, Vast(line 3-alliteration)

*Filament, filament, filament(line 4-repetition)

*measureless oceans(line 7- slant rhyme)

*”Ceaseless musing, venturing, throwing, seeking the spheres to connect with”(line 8-9- ‘ing’ sounds-slant rhyme)

Plenty of slant rhyme and repetition. Slant rhymes are families of words that are not “whole rhymes(like “cat”-”hat”) but have endings that almost rhyme in sound. Like noiseless and patient- hear the “ent” sound? Also the repetition have a particular wave to it. Think of what a spider does. A spider throws out its thread, seeming never-ending and so of course there will be repetition here as the Speaker tries to establish a rhythm similar to a spider sitting and tossing its thread.

Then we come to the Speaker’s comparison of his/her body to a spider and its web. Lines 6-7 mirrors line 4.  Check it out:

Ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing,—seeking the spheres, to connect them;(line 8)

It launch’d forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself;(line 4)

Tone/Mood

In Line 8 the human being has its soul tossed from it and it seeks its source. This could be Heaven. In line 4, the spider throws out filament after filament, seeking what it may catch and hold on it. Now, this poem can have double meaning. I am speaking of the afterlife but what if it’s about venturing out on one’s own to discover what is out there?

The speaker seems to moan, “Oh my soul” a couple of times in this poem. The Speaker cares about this unseen property in the body and the Spider is an object he/she can properly compare it to. I can’t say the poem is sad, but the Speaker is seeking something.

After your reading, is the Speaker sad? Ambivalent? Joyous? Or other?

I love responses! :)

Review of ‘Domino Falls’ by Tananarive Due and Steven Barnes

Domino FallsDomino Falls by Steven Barnes

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I wish I had a real chance to finish reading “Domino Falls” but for some reason the title was archived and my Nook couldn’t read the document any longer.

However, I can say that Domino Falls was becoming a nice follow up to Devil’s Wake, both by Tananarive Due and her husband Steven Barnes. A dynamic writing team has put together an apocalyptic world that is crawling with Freaks. These Freaks were once human and so far the cause is because of two reasons: A flu shot and some weight loss drug.

Kendra(16) and her pals Terry, Piranha, Ursalina, Sonia, Hipster(a dog) and the twins Dean and Darius have approached Threadville- what was once called Domino Falls and they seek sanctuary but at what cost? So far the cost is that the first night they had to get a full body check for bite marks, then relinquish their guns for twenty four hours and next, they had to be put to work. In this world, stores no longer carry price tags. They are labeled with what you can trade for.

Meanwhile, the crew begin to learn more and more about each other and Threadville/Domino Falls. It seems like a place where you can get a hot meal, take out Freaks, hang out, and work hard, but something is not quite right and Kendra’s clairvoyance leads her mind to going to Devil’s Wake to seek out her great aunt.

As I mentioned before, I am sure as to what the cost could have been because my eBook failed to open again and wouldn’t download from the site, but I imagine that Domino Falls will prove to be a false safe haven and that the crew will have to abandon that place as well.

If you like AMC’s The Walking Dead you’ll enjoy this series.

‘Warm Bodies’ is definitely worth watching and reading

Warm Bodies (2013) Poster

From IMDB

The zombie craze has picked up and blew vampires who only suck blood and dance with human women to the curb.

But wait.

Zombies are doing more “animated” stuff too. My husband and I went to see Warm Bodies over the weekend and we both said we saw it because the “storyline seemed good”. We are already fans of The Walking Dead, so why Warm Bodies and what makes it different from other zombie movies or Zombooks? And why are we giving the movie five stars?

In the movie, “R”- who is definitely a zombie, tells his story. He is the narrator in the book and movie. so that’s the first unique thing about Warm Bodies: A zombie gives a peek into his life, er, death. He speaks as if he may be a teen or young adult and he listens to music(old school), likes hot cars, and yes, he does eat bodies but that is his nourishment at the moment.

Then one day he meets Julie.

Need I say more? Julie is alive, warm, blond, and she kills zombies. But he doesn’t eat her. He likes her. He vows always to keep her Safe. The movie even had grusesomness and horror to it, courtesy of the Bonies. The Bonies are zombies that have lost all hope and began to peel their skin away, leaving them looking horribly wicked. They eat anything with a heartbeat…

So, without telling anymore. I just have to say that the author and director of Warm Bodies did excellent with this concept. I laughed, I felt swept away and there are so many themes running through the movie we can talk about it all day long: How it represents society, spirituality, redemtpion, love, all of that and more.

I’m actually looking forward to any books by Isaac Marion.

Oh, Kudos to Nicholas Holt! He did excellent in this movie.

The Essence of True Friendship-Missing My Father

Pine Needles

Last Saturday, I witness the honorable burial of my father. He lost his battle to cancer Tuesday, December 18th but with a smile on his face. To some it would have looked cryptic, but to someone who knows God for herself, there was a new light in my father’s eyes and his teeth shone white. He had the brightest smile on his face and everyone is still talking about it.

However, I wish not to speak on the death of my father who raised me and my sister by himself and who worked so very hard for his family and others (the funeral was packed with hundreds of lives he’s touched).

But I’d rather discuss what I’ve learned from his passing on to be with the Lord. I already know that life is precious and “too short”, but my father was a true friend to everyone. Even to those whom others may consider different or misfits. You can call on him anytime and he would help. No matter what.

What saddens me is that I had to let a couple of friendships go two years ago because my Spirit was telling me: “A friend in need is a friend indeed” Do they care for you? Do you hang out together? Are ya’ll real friends anyway?” I had to say no to all of the above and it was hard. I asked my Consciousness: “Why should any of that matter? I knew these friends for years. No one did anything to hurt me. I can’t let them go just like that.”

A pretty interesting but true statement. No one did anything to me- yet no one did anything for me either. It is not about getting something from someone, because all I probably needed was a prayer back then or someone just to tell me, “Erica it will be alright.” But everyone had their own lives to get on with. Sometimes, a crisis on the other side is not the flame to burn in the other’s chest. We are instructed to carry one another’s burdens(Galatians 6:2 NIV).

There were others in my corner who I failed to recognize at the time. These folks cared about me and I cared for them. My husband, my father, my sister in law and others that have gone out of their way to make sure me and hubby were okay. This is how my father lived his life: He cared for his fellow people even when he was tired, even when they did not deserve a handout from him- he did it anyway.

So now I reflect on my self. These last seven days, I have wondered-Am I a good friend? I can speak about those who moved on and forgot about me, but what about my relationship to God and people?

This is my prayer: to be like my Heavenly Father whom my earthly father patterned after….

‘Antebellum’ by R. Kayeen Thomas, the spirit of words for change

With so many good things going for this book it is hard to pinpint what exactly made “Antebellum” so good: The writing? The superb storytelling? The overiding theme? Or is it the uniqueness?

Whatever you decide after reading the book and/or review, just know that R. Kayeen Thomas is an author to look out for. And with that being said, let’s explore the story and the many symbols tied into the message of what happens when we forget the stock from which we came from.

SPOLIER ALERT….THE STORY

Moses Jenkins. A.K.A. Da N****(“N” word) has the goal of becoming the most famous, richest rapper out there. He has the life any man would want: The glam, the money and the many, many chics who throw themselves at him and he gives each and every one of them the time they want. Meanwhile, Moses finds himself caught between two decisions: Be what the world wants him to be, or who he is called to be. One choice will lead him down a road of fame and possible brutal death while the other will reform and mold him into the man he was meant to be.

Mr. Rose, a white man and CEO of Cosmo Records brings to Moses’ attention a rival group who put out a dis record about Da N**** and he wants him to make a record to come out just as early dissing the group as well. SaTia, Da N****’s manager and friend since middle school advises that this is ghetto mess and can go bad real fast. Well, long story short Moses lived up to his stage name, put a out a dis record, his best friend got shot and his other best friend got mad that Moses did not want to retaliate and in essence Moses/Da N**** ended up getting shot by his own friend based on betrayal.

Moses finds himself back in slavery in the antebellum south and things get interesting from there, but without giving so much plot instead of commentary, let’s just say Moses went through such a horrific ordeal that I caution readers who easily lose their stomach. At some point he is beaten badly. He is starved then fed the worst slop ever created, and even worse…he is demoted from human to lesser than the family dog in a matter of time. He is now in a place where the “N” word has a very pure meaning and the only people who can help him is a healer named Sarah and Roka.

What happens when a rapper loses his ability to talk? Sarah helps Moses get his health together and spoke some wisdom to him saying: “Kinda world you come from where a man has dat much power in ‘is words, but ‘is spirit ain’t real…”(239). Where is our soul in our music? Are we slaves to what someone wants us to be? Could it be that we think the record won’t sell unless we sell out? Moses figured quickly that the “N” word, whether it ends with “a” or “er” is all wrong.

Moses loses his ability to speak after a while because of the trauma and his vocal chords being very useless, perhaps from the tortuous screams he has made. However, Sarah is determined to shine him up like gold and put his pirpose back in his soul. It ws prophesied he will come and save them and now he can’t speak. Once he find the will, he will speak again and they will be ready…

Fast forwarding again, there is a part in the story where Moses(now living up to his real name), stands up to the slave owner Bradley- who is by far the wickedest man in any story(but c’mon, they were that bad in real life too)- and he recites a rhyme “Ringing dem bells!” The slaves gather behind him, fearless they have “fallen behind my rhyme as if God synchronized us”(285) and the slave owner is so afraid he can’t shoot him. I had goosebumps fill my arms when I read the scene and could see it as if I were watching a HBO special premeiere.

In the end, Moses would not even respond to his nickname, Mo’ or Da Nigga. They both died in the antebellum. You must call him Moses now. He has been broken down, kicked, punched, sliced, and fed slop, worked the fields, and had love taken from him and still he remained standing…

The Symbols, The Allusion in Antebellum

As this is a book presented by Zane for Strebor Books, on first look we think smut fiction and erotica, but you will not find that here. In fact, the sensuality and the nudity and rape scenes in this book push the story where it needs to go and you get the feeling that the idea is about more than fame and sex. In the midst of the people and their actions, I caught several symbols.

For example, Mr. Rose represents modern society. He is white, owns a record company and is comfortable keeping Moses as Da N****. At one point he reminds him that he “owns him and he must do what he says” if people want Da N*****…you give them that.

Bradley and the other slave owner Talbert, represents the Antebellum South. They are no different from Mr. Rose in that they want Moses to remain enslaved.

At one point, Moses had a dream( a wet dream) where three brown skinned girls were nude and wanted to cater to him, but when he saw a white female, he felt she represented innocence. She was simply different. Once she had sex with him, she wanted him to call himself a n*****and to do as she said. Moses had to make a decision…give in to the overwheming passion he felt or stop and regain his own manhood and dignity.

The white girl shouldn’t be viewed as simply a female in this dream. She is a symbol of the illusion that states, “Just do as we say and debase yourself, disrespect yourself and we’ll give you money. She is no different from his ex best friends, Mr. Rose, or Talbert and Bradley. She just looked good.

The story was also an allusion to Moses in the bible. Moses freed the slaves with the power of his words while Moses of the bible freed the slaves in Egypt with the power of God with him.

Moses eventually got so broken down, scared witless and nearly lost his mind that he did lose his mind. His “rabbit mind” as the old folks used to say.

But he got the right one back.

The book ended as if there will be next installment and I am glad to announce that “the Seven Days” will be out in 2013.

When words are not enough, the weakness of it in time of loss

Me and my husband just got back from a funeral today and the community, the world will surely miss the gentle young man and his smile. I sat in the church today and looked all around me. Some people I haven’t seen in years: they are grown up now with children, full figures, beards and a new walk. They appear more serious now and are not the little children I knew once before. It was downright scary, serious, but wholly the cycle of life was written on their faces.

I smelled the sweetness in the sanctuary, that smell of cologne, or lotions…but I call it love. Some faces were dry but were deep in thought over what happened. Some faces were drenched in tears needing to be wiped away. Needing for someone to shout, “It was all just one bad dream! We’re in it together but we can wake up and our dear friend will be here once again!”

But I know it is real.

The preacher focused on some terrifying but real thoughts. We need to love today. Repent to God today. Tomorrow or even the next hour is not even promised to us and so this I knew already.

But what I didn’t know was how hard it could be to form words for how we feel. It never seems…adequate. Should we even worry over what to say in a eulogy? Is it important? Some got up with a beautiful poem(poetry cuts close to the words we need), some shared advice, some shared funny memories(which lighten the mood some), and others gave what God had to say in His Word(which was Truth) and so I now ask myself. What are the words I can say aloud to the someone who is no longer physically here?

I can start by saying how I knew the person but then it will be a thought bouncing back to the person no longer being here.

I can start by telling a funny story about the person, but then new memories would not ever form. I clasp the old ones to my heart, the eternal memories.

I can quote the Bible, but it works during my time of joy and the words never truly stick until I am at the point of unbearable pain and must seek the ancients, the sages, the high priests of old to say for me what I cannot.

All these things I can say, and it will always be inadequate…

Inadequate meaning, it doesn’t ever compare to We Will ALWAYS Miss You.

And even that doesn’t place a balm to our pain.

I leave this with you all: The words you have for someone today- share them. If they are words that are hard to chew, dress it in love. Tell someone you love them so much today and watch the meanings fall upon them like  summer rain and even if they don’t say it back to you right away- it sunk into their living, breathing souls.

It did.

A little of this, a little of that, a dash of new and fantasy writing

Some of the most amazing things have been happening and I can’t wait to share it with you. I am certain many of you have exciting writing/reading/blogging news as well. If not. You will. Promise.

First of all, I have been reading some of the most intelligent, well researched, suspenseful books. Twilight by Peter James and I just completed Fana’s story in My Soul to Take by Tananarive Due. The latter review will be posted below this post.

Secondly, I have had stories pouring into my mind. However, I could not just sit and spill my guts on the PC. Oh no. I went to my local library and checked out some awesome books on grammar, editing and how to write a novel. These books are perfect for those wanting to self publish or go the traditional way. I’ll post about that some other time. Just know that having a dream is good. Having the imagination is great. But putting a lil’ “elbow grease” on those manuscripts to get them in tip top shape, is even better.

Third, I have completed my novella and it will be available on Kindle(Kindle Loan for those who are Amazon Prime members) and I am so excited. It is pretty short because it is kind of a prequel to the series so it won’t swallow those megabytes on your e-readers. :) Without giving so much away, here’s a little about the novella.

Stone was on one mission and one mission only: To rescue his friend Korin of the Hues from the Grand Marid. He finds himself suddenly drawn to a slightly older woman who attends community college who has eyes like that of “melty” gold and too much attitude. Her name is Samosa, and Stone will soon discover that there is more to her than he thought and she will find out that what he can give her does not compare to what they need from each other.

That is all I can give for now, but I think you will enjoy it. I am in the final phase of editing and can’t wait for the responses. The story certainly appeals to me but it does matter to me what you think.

How has your writing journey been? Any new tips and awesome discoveries?

My Soul to Take (African Immortals, #4)My Soul to Take by Tananarive Due

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A supernatural union is about to take place.

Many will cheer.

Others will die.

My Soul to Take is the fourth and final(?) book in Tananarive Due’s African Immortal Series. For those who have not read the previous books, please check them out in the order listed below this review.

Fana returns as one about to be betrothed to Michel. Fana has wonderous powers and her blood, Glow, which is being distributed across the nation, is making the government mad for political and economical reasons. Michel, who has immortal powers as well, does not like Glow being transported to heal people and he has his own personal reasons for that.

In this novel, a favorite, beloved character from *Joplin’s Ghost returns and of course we revisit Jessica Jacobs Wolde and Dawit/David Wolde, Fana’s parents as they all risk their hearts, their minds and souls to stop the plague hitting people across the globe. The book definitely jumps from time to time and place to place. One moment your in Mexico and Africa the next. It is true that Due has researched well for this book.

What’s to love:

Ahhh, what’s not to love about a book featuring every culture under the sun. Specifically one featuring an African American girl with incredible powers and who is described as athletic and beautiful. Another shining gem in this work is that it is a genre buster. In my opinion, My Soul to Take reads more like a cross between political fiction/suspense/science fiction/speculation. Some scenes reminded me of a cross between X Men 3 and Kill Bill. Really. I also enjoy the pull of emotions and strength of the family and friendship bond which added that bit of reality for me. Again, Due is spot on with her terrific writing.

Not your typical ‘Twilight’, review of Peter James’ ‘Twilight’ from ’91

TwilightTwilight by Peter James

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is not like the series Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Twilight by Peter James was published in ’91 and is far darker and thrives on the fluid ability to write in flashbacks that draw up to the present. I’ll explain later. For now here’s the backdrop.

Sally Donaldson has just been buried. She was twenty three and pregnant, just got married. However some people, including the vicar or grave attendant, would hear scratching noises from the young woman’s coffin. Was Sally Donaldson buried alive?

Kate Hemingway, a reporter, tries to find the truth after stumbling upon the story and when she is there during the exhumation, what she finds is horrific and beyond all her nightmares. In the midst of this terrifying ordeal, an anesthetist is hung up on life after death and he is ruthless in finding out the truth of what happens when people die.

So this brings us to the story’s set up in general. The book begins with Sally Donaldson being buried and that in itself is quite hard to deal with. Even in fiction. For she was newly wed and pregnant. Then we are thrust into the 60’s with Harvey Swire and his dark depression over his dead mother and then he eventually gets into an accident, causing his soul or what he calls “consciousness” to float up from his body and this pushes him further on edge in his medical studies. What he does will probably shock you.

Each chapter focused on either Kate or Harvey, however the story converges together, making for a quick paced read; and although you can piece together who is behind the mysterious death immediately, I doubt that’s the point of the book. Peter James wanted us to see inside what we all want to know: Can we see through the glass darkly? Is it possible to reach a frontier in death and then come back to our bodies? Why is it that when some die and cross that frointier of the afterlife, they are told to “Go back, you’re not ready.”

The book was certainly a book to think about long after.

If you like: Robin Cook’s medical thrillers and the question of life after death then, you’ll love this book.

Not appropriate for my Christian readers, but was good fiction

Priestess of the NilePriestess of the Nile by Veronica Scott
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It is forbidden for a human to physically join with a Great One or a god, but when Sobek meets Merys, a priestess, their passion for one another threatens to ignite and blast through the old rules. This novella is a quick read for anyone who loves two things: Ancient history and erotica.

The story takes place along the Nile River and among the temples of the gods. Merys is a sun kissed skinned beauty with a beautiful soprano voice and one day while Sobek is walking along the “ruins of the beach” he finds her and is immediately entranced. He speaks with her and wonders why she is hanging around crocodiles near the temple. Doesn’t she knew they could kill her? Yet she wears an amulet for protection. The book quickly progresses to Sobek and her falling in love and both of them learn a little something about each other. The only issue is that Sobek is not just a handsome man with long hair and pale green/golden eyes and a chiseled chest. He is something much more and their lives could be threatened if their trysts continue.

The book held nothing back. It gave the power of story, the power of character, the power of plot and ancient history complete with things we may know from the movie The Mummy: like Anubis, weighing of the hearts in canopic(?)jars, and the different gods of the sun and air, and the author was also not afraid to inject how upsetting reality can be and the fight for true love. Not everyone will accept it for what it is. There are people everyday who wish to be together forever but cannot because of backgrounds, religion, color, etc.

One aspect that caused me to give this book 4.5 stars is because the beliefs in different gods taking care of each realm in a human life and treating us as if we are nothing is vastly different from what I believe- yet on a more scholarly note, this is what the beliefs were in Egypt, 1500 BC. So no way could I get mad at that.

I can definitely see myself reading more of Veronica Scott’s books. This one was very satisfying.
If you like: The Mummy and/or Clash of the Titans (with a romantic twist in it), then you’ll love Priestess of the Nile.

Bonus Review Feature (SPOILER): Sobek is a crocodile god and because of this he can change into a half man half croc or a full thirty foot long killing machine. I thought about the name Sobek for a long time and it finally dawned on me: The energy drink I loved so much a few years ago with the crocodile on the front was called Sobe. I should be looking up that name-obviously it has to do with lizards.

Fallen Angels, Half Humans, Firecracker Romance and…Redemption?

Harlequin Nocturne

Imagine that you have walked from Heaven, got bored with Hell and are sick of Earth and its dim witted primates yet you must  deal with that because its your mission to wipe out the lesser demons or nefariand their half demon children.

Well, thats what Raum of the Fallen must contend with.  He and other ex-demons are summoned by a Higher Court to wipe out the humans’ half demon children, yet Ember Riddick, a shy but sassy, fiery red head has caught the beautiful dark haired Fallen angel’s eye. There is but one teensy weensy problem- She is the half-demon he must destroy, and soon enough the pages erupt with their silly banters, witty comebacks, and the sensuality which pulsates literally off the page.

My opinion of this book is very high, which is kind of awkward for this sweet bible believing blogger :)  and all, but I must say I give credit where it is due. Kendra Leigh Castle has crafted a story based on the Fall, the Heavens, and gives a pretty real description of what Hell must look like and how Raum gets bored with the heat and the darkness and you actually feel kind of bad for the big hunk because even though he has the green eyes, the muscular build, and a smile which obviously made Ember melt-he still believed he was evil incarnate and thus it makes him hard to love. I wanted to review this from Ember’s point of view but this was purely a story built off of the Alpha male and his spiritual/psycho-social problems. This 283 page story was hot! You get swept away in the world of the Vampires, wolves, and other ex demons all the while Raum trying to destroy and, er, save Ember. Its a weird relationship, but you will love it!

This book is like a cross between Twilight and the movie Legion.

The only thing I will say is that the angel Uriel, an angel of God played a good role in this work yet I didn’t like him swearing. Swearing? What is swearing anyway? Hmmm, case study for another blog post I guess.

If I could give this book ten stars, I would.
